Every traveler sets out driven by different desires. Some are simply hoping to explore and enjoy the world's wonders, snag some souvenirs, snap some photos and safely return home, with one more pin in the map... this is not a story about them.
There are others, you see... drifters, vagabonds, tramps and hustlers, not to mention runaways, vultures, sex addicts and saints, who creep along the fringe of the backpacker culture, barely noticeable at a glance, never out-numbering the hordes on holiday... except in one legendary locale, where- for a while- the laws of the trail were defied.
This is a celebration of that moment, a tribute to the cast of crazies behind the curtains, and an inquiry into the methods and motivation of the modern traveler.

This book is awesome! It’s 254 pages but I read it in only three days (It usually takes me months to finish a book.). It’s a very fast and very, very interesting read, with the best part being that it’s a true story. The various characters, varying circumstances, and colorful/comic/tragic events are described so vividly that I experienced a wide range of emotions, most notably a tinge of sadness because it had to end (both the hostel and the book). I guess there can’t be a Part II but hopefully there can be some kind of sequel. I would recommend this book to anyone who, through whatever kind of search or system-generated recommendation, is lucky enough to come across it.Product details

The Pirates of Ipanema Brian Waksmunski 9780692552483 Books Reviews
Firstly, I have to pass a compliment. I have read the book just in a few days (2 or 3 I guess) since it was so interesting. The book is about a "traveler" which tries to find his luck in the big city of Rio de Janeiro. As he is walking through the city in order to find a hostel to rent, he found THE place. The story tells how the hostel project has started and gives you a nice impression of the hostel which is called "Piratas de Ipanema". (Really special place btw, people who have been there will approve...unfortunately doesn't exist anymore)
The book really makes you feel going abroad and traveling! It also offers great conversations and great stories of a wide variety of people.
In summary, it is a excellent book !
This lovely piece of work is both melancholic and awfully funny, the witty and metaphorical language use runs like a thread throughout the story, stimulating one's imagination to a great exten and making it difficult not to keep on thinking about the characters and the plot even after you've finished reading.
What makes this book such an exciting read is the fact that it captures the atmosphere in the hostel so well where there are people coming and going every day and so many things happening. Hilarious and even more captivating is the fact the characters, which are described with great attention to detail, really exist and the events really took place. With the cover actually faintly resembling a book i'd find in the university library, this kind of sociological study is the most interesting one i've ever read.
The author takes you on a trip, and after you've finished you can't wait to travel again.
More than just a good yarn about a romantic venture into the hostel business. It's a new philosophy of travel for a new generation.
The next best thing to being lost in the world is to be lost in this book! This first hand experience is the closest most people will get to truly get to the chaos, joy and excess that was and is the Pirates of Ipanema. The cast of characters in Pirates are too outlandish to be inspired by anything else than real people.
This is a great story, a really fun read and at the end you will find youself asking. Am I "Piratas Material'?

It's not often that you can feel nostalgic about a place you've never been to. This book does that, while encompassing what I imagine is a realistic view of the characters that come to find themselves staying in hostels during their travels.
A warning if you aren't currently or have never been a "party guy or girl" much of the essence will be lost on you. For those of us that can always relate to a good party story(or lack thereof), and who appreciate a tale of starting an adventure with no idea where it will end, this book is at times heartfelt, and mostly laugh out loud funny.
Enjoy!

The book is excellent, a witty, humourous and compelling read that encompasses the excitement of moving to a new country and encouraging people to truly find what they never even knew they were looking for on their travels. Meet the locals, the sordid travellers, the hardened backpackers and more. After you finish you'll feel like you've been there yourself and you need to go back!
